My Classroom Set Up
Description of my Classroom Set Up:
|
Rationale for this specific set up:
Six Functions of the Classroom Setting
Security and Shelter: I want to create a warm and structured classroom because students feel more respected when they are part of a warm and welcoming environment (Weinstein & Novodvosky, 2015). I will accomplish this factor by using community- building activities so students get a chance to know everyone in the classroom. By doing this, it will allow students to participate in risk-taking. Creating a comfortable environment fosters psychological security, especially for students who have EBD. Students who are EBD need to feel safe, and be part of a structured environment. There is a designated seat away from the group tables for students who need to shut out distractions, catch up on homework, or to take a personal break.
Social Contact: The desks are organized in this diagram because students are allowed to interact with each other, depending on the classroom activities. Weinstein states that teacher should encourage student-student interaction to promote collaboration (Weinstein & Novodvosky, 2015).
Symbiotic Identification: I have incorporated a "Me" board so that students get an opportunity to see Ms. Samayoa's interests outside of school. "Teacher should make it a habit to display their own belief" (Weinstein & Novodvosky, 2015). Even Cushman expresses how kids will relate more to teachers who express their ideals and individuality (Cushman, 2008, p.53). Additionally, student work will be hung on bulletin boards to showcase student achievement.
Pleasure: In order to make my classroom aesthetically pleasing, I will make sure to make bulletin boards attractive and eye appealing. I will use different colors and use different visuals to attract student attention. I will also include positive posters that motivates students to learn.
Growth: Classroom environments should invite students to "explore, observe, investigate, test and discover" (Weinstein & Novodvorsky, 2015, p. 40). In order to make sure my classroom fosters student growth, I will have a wide variety of stimulating activities such as brain teasers, math games, and puzzles. Students will be encouraged to explore these thought-provoking manipulatives (Weinsten & Novodvorsky, 2015, p.40)
Task Instrumentality: There will be a classroom set of calculators, accessible to students at each table group. The homework/announcement and agenda board will be placed on the white board so students can determine their assignments, and the plan for the day. By implementing a structured procedure in which all students become familiar with the routine will benefit students who are ADHD, Autistic and EBD.
